Racing Towards the Next Genration of STEM

Troy, New York – On April 28 2018 three brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. met while coaching their respective teams at the Ten80 Education National STEM League Finals. This international STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) competition was hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

During this competition, more than 50 middle and high school teams competed for the Grand Championship, where students tested their innovation skills in the Student Racing and Student Rover Challenge competitions. The National STEM League Finals are the conclusion of yearlong curriculums in which students think innovatively about how engineering can improve personal, academic and professional pursuits. Brother Chadwick Hawking (XI Chapter, Spring 2001) brought his team “Knight Riderz” from Columbia SC, Brother Demetrius Jackson (Delta Omega Chapter, Spring 2012) brought his team “Lone Star Motorsport” for San Antonio TX, and Brother Lionel Pittman (Sigma Omega Chapter, Spring 2013) brought his team “BE4ST” from Chicago IL. In between the student competitions the brothers fellowshipped and reflected on the importance of mentorship through STEM learning in the African American community.

Brother Jackson’s team won the Grand Championship in the Middle School Division and, Brother Pittman’s, team won the Grand Championship in the High School Division and took 2nd place in the Autonomous Rover Competition. From its inception, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., has been intertwined in the STEM community, and these brothers are assurance that the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., has a continued and lasting impact on the STEM field.

Congratulations to our very own Brother John Moore (Iota 59′) for receiving the Divine Nine-Legacy of Service Award during the 2017 NPHC Sankofa Awards Luncheon. The event awards chapters, officers and members for their contributions and service.

The purpose of the Sankofa Foundation is to provide educational workshops, forums, lectures, and/or panels on topics relevant to the community at large, but in particular to those students transitioning from a junior college to a four-year college or university.

The Men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Omega Chapter celebrate Annual Achievement Week.

National Achievement Week is a mandated program of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., that was originally designed to promote the study of African American life and history. It’s beginnings date back to the 1920 Grand Conclave in Nashville. It was at this Conclave that Brother Carter G. Woodson inspired the overall idea. In 1927, at his urging, the Fraternity made National Negro Achievement Week an annual observance. In 1976, this commemoration evolved into Black History Month. Presently, the Achievement Week Program is used to recognize those individuals at the local and national levels who have made significant contributions toward improving the quality of life for African Americans.

As a part of our achievement week, the national organization provides scholarships up to $5,000.00 to national high school essay contest winners. This year, Sigma Omega Chapter received a record 100 plus essay submissions. Therefore, we will be not only submitting a candidate for the national winner but thanks to our fundraising via the Fab Forty Co-Ed Fantasy Football League (or alternative “efforts”), we are also giving scholarship to our three top local essayist.

Brother Ernest Tolden 1929 – 2016

Sigma Omega Chapter sends our sincere condolences to the family of Brother Ernest Tolden. Brother Tolden was initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1949 through Epsilon Epsilon Chapter. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force from 1951 –1955. He moved to Chicago in 1956 and taught math in the Chicago Public School system.

He was a longtime member of Sigma Omega Chapter and faithfully served the Fraternity for over 60 years. He was recognized by the chapter as a Legacy Brother, reserved for members having more than 30 years of service. He was also recognized as a Golden Bridge Builder, reserved for Brothers having more than 50 years of service. He will truly be missed.

Veterans Standdown

The Veterans Administration donates food and other items to veterans i.e. clothing, personal hygiene items, shoes and coats. The men of Sigma Omega Chapter helped by sorting, packing and distributing those items. As a group we volunteered Saturday June 11th at the General Jones Armory, 5200 s. Cottage Grove, Chicago, Il 60615.

History of Standdown

In times of war combat units in Vietnam were removed from the battlefield to a place of relative security and safety to rest and recuperate. This safe haven model inspired Vietnam veterans Robert Van Keuren and Jon Nachison to develop the first Standdown in 1988 in San Diego. This event was a grassroots intervention where homeless veterans were brought together in a single location to access community resources and supplies needed to begin addressing their individual problems and rebuilding their lives. Since the pioneering work of Keuren and Nachison the concept of Standdown has spread across the country.

On Sunday Feb 28th Brothers from Sigma Omega and Rho Gamma Gamma Chapters in conjunction with Sigma Omega Foundation, raised money for the Big Brother/Sister organization. Every dollar raised helps match kids with a mentor. Research shows that children who have been mentored have higher self-esteem and are more likely to stay in school – empowering them to succeed, give back and realize their true potential.

On Thursday Feb 25th, 2016 Brother from Sigma Omega and Sigma Omega Foundation participated in Black History program at Woodlawn Elementary School, coordinated by Brother Joe McCord. Dr. White impressed the staff and students by showing them that an Omega Man above the age of 80 still had the ability to Hop like a 20 year old. Brothers explained the origins of Black Greek Organization, the humble beginnings of Omega Psi Phi as well as noted African American Men that are members of Omega Psi Phi. A good time was had by students, staff and the Brothers!

Water for Flint!

The Chicagoland Men of Omega set out to make a difference in and around Flint, MI. Chicago Omegas collected about $3000.00 in an effort to provide clean drinking and cooking water along with baby wipes so parents could clean their small children.

Brothers started out in the morning and purchased 415-4 gallon water jugs, 650 cases of water (40-16 oz per case) and 30 boxes of wet wipes (10 cases, 100 wipes per box). We then headed to Hyde Park High School in Chicago, to top off the truck we had, help finish collecting water and loading it on the several trucks that were available. We asked the community to drop off water between the hours of 8-11 but when we departed for Flint people we still dropping off water! We also got word around 2 pm while on the road that people were still dropping off water. If there was any doubt about Omega’s impact on OUR community it was re-affirmed Saturday. Omega was by far the dominant force, we were directing traffic, instructing the youth on how to stack the water for easy travel, coordinating efforts for more material and overall being the Leaders that our Founders envisioned. Brothers it was truly a site to behold

Brothers having seen and talked with the residents of Flint this cannot be the only effort we are involved in. THEY REALLY NEED OUR HELP. They have to use bottled water to bathe, cook, wash clothes and brush their teeth. The 35th District Representative Hon. Brother Steven Watkins announced a GoFundMe drive to deliver water during the State of the Fraternity Luncheon. The goal is at the minimum 1000 cases. Do something today to make this world better for those that follow us tomorrow. BUILD THAT BRIDGE!

Brother Wayne Watson – A Legacy of Leadership

Brother Wayne D. Watson (Sigma Omega ’13) has created an academic legacy that very few can match or emulate. As the longest serving African-American Administrator in High Education within the State of Illinois, the success and growth of Chicago’s City College structure can be closely associated with Brother Watson’s uncompromising leadership and high expectations for post- secondary learning. Brother Watson earned his Associates Degree from Joliet Junior College, Bachelor’s Degree in Health/Physical Education & Recreation, Master of Arts and Teaching, and Doctorate in Higher Education Administration all from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In fact, he is the 1st African-American male to earn a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in High Education.

Among Brother Watson’s accomplishments and achievements, he served as The Chancellor of Chicago’s Community Colleges from 1998 to 2009. (Malcolm X, Kennedy King, Olive Harvey, Truman College, Harold Washington College, etc..) In addition, Brother Watson was recognized by the Higher Learning Commission in a 10 year re-accreditation, which is a top seal of approval within the higher education platform. Brother Watson’s reform agenda streamlined operations, enhanced academic standards, increased accountability and transparency, and revived the communities pursuits for post-secondary education.

Brother Watson concluded his professional career as President of Chicago State University, in which he provided the transformational leadership style that enabled Chicago State University to make significant progress in the areas of academics, athletics, and administrative capacity. Brother Watson has no plans on slowing down, as the one time Olympic finalist heads into his much deserved retirement years with energy and enthusiasm preserved for his grandchildren, family, and friends. If you really want to know the caliber of leader and the impact that Brother Watson left upon Higher Education, just ask any of the 1.5 million students and the 197,000 people with degrees and certificates earned while under Brother Watson’s leadership.

According to the Omega Psi Phi Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, Brother Watson is part of the only living trio consisting of a Grandfather, Father, and Son initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity that are still living. This trio consists of Brother Wade H. Watson initiated by way of Psi Phi Chapter in 1940, Brother Wayne D. Watson initiated by way of Sigma Omega in 2013, and Brother Wade F. Watson initiated by way of Sigma Omega in 2013.

On Wednesday December 2, 20115, 100 Black Men stood outside of Wendell Phillips Academy to welcome, celebrate, and acknowledge young men as they entered the building. With all the media surrounding the negativity in Chicago, it’s necessary to celebrate Chicago’s 1st Public School to win a State Football Championship in similar fashion. There are several young men that have accepted Division 1 scholarships and one young man that has a 3.7 gpa with 25 full ride scholarships on the table. You may or may not hear about this in the news, but there are exciting things happening for our young men that are focused and determined to break out of their circumstances.

Thanksgiving Feed The Needy

ON Thursday November 26th the Brothers of Sigma Omega along with Sigma Omega Foundation and other members of the NPHC spent time preparing Thanksgiving dinners and delivering them across the city of Chicago. The project fed almost 700 senior citizen and the sick and shut-in, although is was Thanksgiving the Brothers took time out of their day to spend time with their OTHER families.

On Saturday November 21st the Brothers of Sigma Omega in conjunction with Sigma Omega Foundation assisted Cook County Commissioner brother Robert Steele with his annual Feed the Elderly event. Brothers showed up and let the elderly know that we care. The Brothers set up the tables and chairs, assisted the elderly and veterans to their tables, served them food, drink and dessert all the while having a great time. Elderly and Veterans were fed until they were full and had a wonderful time catching up with old friends and making new ones.
